Phosphoric acid is a colorless, corrosive liquid with an acrid odor. It is soluble in water and reacts with most organic substances. Phosphoric acid is used as a catalyst, in the manufacture of fertilizers and food additives, and as the active ingredient in some cola drinks. It also has applications in the textile industry, where it is used to remove starch from cotton fibers. Phosphoric acid is an oxidizing agent that can be used to disinfect cancer tissues. This chemical has high resistance to transfer reactions, which makes it useful for analytical methods such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS technique can be used to measure pH levels by measuring the impedance of a solution when a small voltage is applied across its surface. Benzalkonium chloride is added as a preservative or bactericide because phosphoric acid readily reacts with many other organic materials and may cause explosions if not diluted with water.
