This compound has been shown to have antibacterial properties by cleaving the magnesium bond in the enzyme methionine synthase, which catalyzes the formation of methionine from homocysteine and ATP. 4-Phenylbenzoic acid methyl ester is also able to cleave bonds in nonpolar solvents such as benzene, chloroform, and dichloromethane.
