Description:

2-Phenyl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine (PIP) is a benzodiazepine receptor ligand that can be used as an experimental tool to study the function of this receptor. PIP binds to the benzodiazepine receptor and blocks the binding of GABA, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. PIP has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of glucocerebrosidase, which is an enzyme involved in lysosomal degradation. The carboxylate group on PIP interacts with sodium carbonate and chlorine atom in a chemical reaction to produce an unstable intermediate called chloroiminopyrimidinium ion. This intermediate binds to the imidazole ring of 2-phenyl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine and undergoes a cyclic rearrangement reaction leading to another stable product called 2-(chloroimino)
