Phenylpyruvic acid sodium salt is a phenylalanine metabolite that is synthesized from phenylalanine. Phenylalanine is converted to phenylalanine hydroxypyruvate by the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, and then to pyruvic acid by the enzyme tyrosinase. Pyruvic acid is converted to phenylpyruvic acid sodium salt by the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase. Phenylpyruvic acid sodium salt can be used as an indicator of oxidative injury in cells, because it is a substrate for enzymes involved in energy metabolism. It can also be used as an indicator of metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, due to its role in glucose production. Phenylpyruvic acid sodium salt can also be used as an agent for the synthesis of polymers with fluorescence-detecting properties.
