3-Methylthio-1,2-propanediol is a hydrophilic vitamin that has been used as an isotope label in trichomitus techniques. It is also detectable in the matrix effect and radiopharmaceutical. 3-Methylthio-1,2-propanediol has been shown to be an effective agent for the treatment of trichomonas vaginalis (TV) infections. The drug binds to the cell wall of TV and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 3-Methylthio-1,2-propanediol is also able to inhibit the growth of trichomonads by methylating thioethers.
