Description:Polixetonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that is used as a preservative in ophthalmic solutions and eye drops. The clinical studies showed that polixetonium chloride has a dissociating effect on the proteins present in the cornea, leading to an increase in the permeability of the corneal epithelium. Impurities have been observed during manufacturing and cross-resistance has been demonstrated. Polixetonium chloride has also shown to be effective against trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica.
