Phthalaldehydic acid is a dicarboxylic acid with the molecular formula C6H4(CO2H)2. It is a white solid that is soluble in water and alcohols. The compound can be prepared from phthalic anhydride, which is converted to the acid by hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide. The acid also forms salts such as sodium phthalate, potassium phthalate, and calcium phthalate. Phthalaldehydic acid has been shown to react with amines to form esters, and with trifluoroacetic acid to form an acid complex. This reaction mechanism has been confirmed using FT-IR spectroscopy on protonated molecules of the reactants.
