• Description: (2S,4S)-(+)-2,4-Pentanediol is a chiral stereochemical. It has been shown to be prepared in high yield by the reaction of (1R,2S)-(-)-(+)-1-phenylethanol with excess 2,4-dichloro-1,3-butadiene. The reaction is carried out at room temperature and is complete in 3 hours. A preparative synthesis of this compound has been reported by cyclization of the commercially available (+)-pyrrolidine with (+)malonaldehyde diethyl acetal. This process takes place in a solvent such as ethanol or tetrahydrofuran at temperatures between -10°C and +15°C for 1 hour. This method is also applicable to other enantiomers of pyrrolidine. The nmr spectra show resonances at δ = 7.0 ppm for the methyl group and δ = 4
