The polyethylene chains are oriented in such a way that they form an irregular three-dimensional network with spaces between them. This network provides storage space for water vapor, which can be released when needed. The rate constant (k) for the hydrolysis reaction depends on the concentration of water vapor in the air, because it determines how much water will be released at any given time.
