The (1,10-phenanthroline) ligand is a chelate molecule that can be exchanged with other ligands to change the optical properties of the complex. The fluorescence microscope detects the emitted light at 488 nm and 514 nm wavelengths. The luminescent europium complex emits light when it binds to an organic molecule such as vinyl alcohol or water vapor.
