Polyethylene Glycol Mono-Cetyl Ether (PEGMC) is a polymer that is often used as an excipient in pharmaceutical formulations. It can be synthesized by the reaction of ethylene oxide with monocetyl alcohol, although it can also be obtained from natural compounds such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid or glycol ethers. PEGMC has been shown to have an antimicrobial effect and is used in the plastics and textiles industries, but it has not been found to be effective against bacteria resistant to antibiotics. PEGMC is soluble in water at a concentration of 10% and has a phase transition temperature of -14°C. The enzyme activities of PEGMC are low, but it does show some activity for cytochrome P450 enzymes. The solubility data for this polymer is limited, so analytical methods are needed to determine its solubility in other solvents.
