Picropodophyllin is a natural product that has been shown to inhibit the growth of human cancer cells in vitro. It has been found to activate apoptosis, which may be due to its ability to induce pro-apoptotic protein expression and inhibition of the protein synthesis pathway. Picropodophyllin is also able to bind to receptors, such as those for 5HT (serotonin) and dopamine. This binding leads to an increase in cAMP levels, which may be responsible for the observed cell death.
