Phytolaccinic acid is a chemical compound found in the leaves of Quillaja saponaria. It is a triterpenoid with two hydroxyl groups and one carboxylic acid group. The hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) technique has been used to separate this molecule from other components of the plant in order to study its biological properties. The HILIC technique separates molecules based on their polarity, size, and charge. Phytolaccinic acid has been shown to have hemolytic activity and cytotoxic effects on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. This molecule also binds to cell nuclei, making it useful for studying the matrix effect in cells. Phytolaccinic acid has been found to be effective against chronic bronchitis in humans and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties as well as anticancer effects.
