The nitro group can be reduced to an amine or a hydroxyl group by hydrogen chloride in acetonitrile. This method has been used in the synthesis of drugs such as acyclovir and penciclovir. Phenoxyacetonitrile also inhibits growth factor production, which may be due to its inhibitory properties on the enzyme houben-hoesch reaction.
