4-Phenoxystyrene (4PS) is a vinylic monomer that is used in the production of polymers and plastics. 4PS can be synthesized by electroreduction of styrene, followed by halide abstraction. The dimerization reactions are reversible and depend on the temperature, concentration, and pH. Monomeric 4PS can also be produced through chlorination of the phenol groups at -30°C.
The yield of monomeric 4PS is between 63% to 81% with an overall yield of 78%. The ethers diphenyl ether (DPE) and tetradecylphenylether (TEPE) were found to be good catalysts for the dimerization reaction. The rate of this reaction was found to increase as the number of phenyl groups increased on the molecule.
