4-Phenoxybiphenyl is a white solid that is soluble in ether, ethanol, and benzene. It has a melting point of around 160°C and can be recrystallized from sodium hydroxide solution. 4-Phenoxybiphenyl can be sulfonated to form a sulfonic acid or esterified to form an acid chloride. 4-Phenoxybiphenyl has been shown to be activated by electron transfer agents such as sodium hypochlorite, sodium dichromate, or potassium permanganate. This chemical has been found to have carcinogenic properties and is classified as a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). The chromophore of 4-phenoxybiphenyl can undergo photochemical reactions with ultraviolet light.
