Description:

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a biocompatible polymer that has been used as an absorption enhancer for hydrophobic drugs. PEG can be synthesized from ethylene oxide and propylene oxide by the addition of a hydroxyl group to each molecule. This polymer can be modified with fatty acid chains to enhance its solubility in water. The absorption rate of PEGs is dependent on the number of ethylene oxide units and their degree of polymerization. PEGs are also soluble in organic solvents, which allows them to interact with other substances more easily than other polymers. PEGs may have significant interactions with chemicals such as sodium salts, which could affect their transport properties in biological systems. Laser ablation experiments have shown that the synergic effect between PEG and sodium citrate enhances the degradation of wastewater treatment sludge.
