Physalis fruit is a plant in the nightshade family. Physalis fruits are used to make jams, jellies, or pies. The active substances in the fruit are β-unsaturated ketones that have been shown to be effective against tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and other proinflammatory cytokines. These compounds can be extracted from the fruit by boiling it with acetate alcohol and then filtering the mixture through paper. This extract is then concentrated and purified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or mass spectrometric detection (MS). The purification process involves an efficient method of irreversible inhibition of plasma TNF-α with physalin L.
