Parisaponin V is a saponin with inhibitory doses in the low micromolar range. It binds to the mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibits the formation of reactive oxygen species, which leads to cell death. Parisaponin V has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and hypoglycemic effects in vitro and in vivo. In a pharmacokinetics study, it was found that parisaponin V is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, but undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes. This compound also has an effect on human serum glucose levels, which may be due to its ability to enhance insulin secretion or inhibit gluconeogenesis.
