Prephenic acid barium salt is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme dehydrogenase, which is essential for the synthesis of fatty acids. This compound also inhibits streptococcus, lactococcus, and staphylococcus bacteria. The affinity of this compound for these bacteria is due to its ability to bind to the cavity in the enzyme's active site. Prephenic acid barium salt has been shown to inhibit listeria monocytogenes and maldi-tof strains of Lactobacillus.
