Purpurogallin is a natural compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of human pathogens. It is synthesized by plants and found in many medicinal herbs and plant extracts. Purpurogallin inhibits the replication of viruses, such as herpes simplex virus, influenza A virus, and hepatitis C virus. Purpurogallin has also been shown to inhibit epidermal growth factor-induced proliferation of human Hl-60 cells and light signal transmission. Purpurogallin is a glycol ether with gsh-px activities that are involved in protein synthesis. X-ray crystallography studies have shown that purpurogallin coordinates with the active site of human GSH-px enzyme.
