Piperazine is a basic heterocyclic compound that is used primarily as a starting material for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. It also exhibits pharmacological and biochemical properties. The piperazine molecule has two nitrogen atoms, an amine group and a six-membered ring with three carbon atoms and three hydrogen atoms. Piperazine hexahydrate (PZH) is water-soluble in its anhydrous form and is widely used in biochemical reactions involving metal hydroxides and metal oxides. PZH has been shown to be effective in the treatment of metabolic disorders such as urea cycle disorders, hyperammonemia due to liver disease, and glycogen storage disease type III.
Piperazine hexahydrate can be synthesized by reacting ethylenediamine with piperazinium hydrochloride in the presence of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide at elevated temperatures.
