Quinoline-6-carboxylic acid (QCA) is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of quinolines. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria and is a substrate for reductase enzymes. QCA inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. The reduction potential of QCA is -0.66 V vs. NHE at pH 7, which is similar to other quinolines but different from chloramphenicol (-0.87 V). QCA displays a higher affinity for DNA than chloramphenicol does, with values of 10 μM and 4 μM respectively. This antibiotic also has been shown to react with electrophiles such as oxygen or nitrite in the presence of ultraviolet radiation or single-crystal x-ray diffraction techniques, forming reaction products such as oxoquinoline derivatives and nitro
