It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria and is a substrate for reductase enzymes. QCA inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. The reduction potential of QCA is -0.66 V vs. NHE at pH 7, which is similar to other quinolines but different from chloramphenicol (-0.87 V). QCA displays a higher affinity for DNA than chloramphenicol does, with values of 10 μM and 4 μM respectively.
