Quercetagetin is a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) inhibitor that binds to the pim-1 protein, which is an enzyme located on the inner mitochondrial membrane. Quercetagetin has been shown to be cytotoxic to cancerous cells in vitro and has potential as a biomarker for cancer. It is also active against infectious diseases caused by bacteria and fungi. Quercetagetin inhibits the replication of DNA by binding to the template strand, thus inhibiting DNA synthesis. The quercetagetin molecule contains benzalkonium chloride, which may be responsible for its toxicity. Quercetagetin also blocks hydrogen bonding interactions between the bases in DNA and prevents transcription of RNA from dna strands, thus inhibiting protein synthesis.
