Riboflavin is a vitamin that is required for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It is also essential for the synthesis of coenzymes and other biologically important molecules. Riboflavin can be synthesized by bacteria from the amino acid tryptophan, but in most organisms it must be obtained from the diet. Riboflavin has been shown to have an antioxidant function by maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential and preventing oxidative injury to DNA. Riboflavin has been shown to be effective in treating patients with mitochondrial disorders, such as Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), which is caused by a mutation to mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma (POLG). Riboflavin has also been shown to improve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease by reducing oxidative stress and increasing energy metabolism.
