Resmethrin is a pyrethroid insecticide. It is used to control insects, such as mosquitoes and other pests, on residential, commercial and agricultural sites. Resmethrin has been shown to cause the development of pulmonary hypertension in animals when administered at high doses over a long period of time. This chemical also has an effect on the energy metabolism of cells by inhibiting the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and RNA synthesis in cells. The matrix effect may be due to its ability to bind with cellular proteins or cell membranes, altering their function. Resmethrin is also toxic to aquatic organisms because it can be absorbed through the skin or lungs following contact with contaminated water.
