The 3-hydroxymethyl group is synthesized by the enzyme activity of beta-ketothiolase and alpha-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase. The 2-methylpropanoyl group is synthesized by the enzyme activity of 3-hydroxybutanal dehydrogenase. This product is important in energy metabolism, as it can be converted to acetoacetyl CoA and enter the Krebs cycle. It also has potential structural roles in protein synthesis and gene expression.
