It is a racemic mixture of two stereoisomers that are mirror images of each other and have different effects on the human body. Rac-cis-N-Desmethyl sertraline hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit reuptake of serotonin from the synaptic cleft, which may be responsible for its antidepressant effect. The compound is also radiolabeled with carbon 11 and can be used as a diagnostic agent for positron emission tomography (PET).
