Risperidone can be used as an antipsychotic drug in the treatment of schizophrenia and mania. This is due to it binding to the 5-HT2 receptor and antagonizing serotonin, leading to a reduction in symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. This product can also act on the D1 and D2 Dopamine receptors. It is thought, that as a result of Risperidone’s antagonistic activity against D2 receptors within the tuberoinfundibular pathway, an increase in the level of prolactin occurs. Consequently leading to hyperprolactinemia, a negative adverse effect when Risperidone is used as a drug. Risperidone has been shown to have cardiac effects, including increasing heart rate and QT interval. It is also metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and can be detected in wastewater after oral administration of a single dose (0.5 mg/kg).
