Rottlerin is a natural compound that inhibits the activity of MMP-9, an enzyme that degrades the extracellular matrix. It is also a potent inhibitor of autophagy and apoptosis, which are important for the development of cancer cells. Rottlerin binds to dinucleotide phosphate (DNP) and inhibits DNP-mediated transcriptional regulation. Rottlerin also has a chemical biology component to its mechanism of action due to its ability to bind to DNA. Rottlerin is currently being studied as a potential treatment for squamous carcinoma, in which it reduces tumor size by increasing apoptosis pathway activation.
