Retene is a chemical compound that is found in the environment as an anthropogenic product. Retene is also a fluorescent chemical with two hydroxyl groups and two double bonds. The presence of these functional groups allows retene to have synchronous fluorescence, which makes it useful for detection. Retene has been shown to cause cardiac effects in rats and mice due to its ability to increase cytosolic calcium levels. This can be caused by chronic exposure or through ingestion of high doses of retene. Retene also has carcinogenic potential and has been shown to affect the metabolism of fatty acids when used as a model system.
