Rotundic acid is a potent inhibitor of the mitochondrial membrane potential and is cytotoxic to cells. Rotundic acid inhibits the growth of bowel disease-causing bacteria, such as Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridium difficile, by inducing apoptosis. It also has significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells in vitro. The mechanism of action of rotundic acid is not yet known, but it has been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for nuclear DNA, matrix effect on biological properties, and growth factor-β1 in mice. Rotundic acid has been shown to be an effective agent for the treatment of oral pathogens such as Prevotella nigrescens and Porphyromonas gingivalis.
