• Description: Salubrinal is a protein synthesis inhibitor that binds to the eukaryotic initiation factor 2-alpha (eIF2α) and prevents its phosphorylation, which leads to inhibition of mRNA translation and protein synthesis. Salubrinal is used for the treatment of bowel diseases, including ulcerative colitis. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in HL-60 cells, as well as axonal growth in mice with spinal cord injury. This drug also blocks the apoptosis pathway by inhibiting caspase activation and blocking mitochondrial membrane permeability. Salubrinal is highly selective for eIF2α but not other serine/threonine kinases such as PKR or IKK.
