Silver carbonate (AgCO3) is a high-resistance compound that can be used as an analytical chemistry reagent. It reacts with water vapor in the air to form soluble silver hydroxide and carbon dioxide gas. This reaction is exothermic, releasing heat energy. Silver carbonate is used as an antimicrobial agent for the prevention of microbial growth on objects. It has been shown to have a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of glass, making it useful for calibrating temperature-measuring instruments. The mechanism by which silver carbonate inhibits bacterial growth is unknown but may involve the redox cycle or oxidation-reduction reactions between silver and oxygen or hydrogen peroxide.
