The reaction between sodium selenite pentahydrate and malonic acid generates hydrogen peroxide, which has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells. Sodium selenite pentahydrate is used as a plasma mass spectrometry standard for the identification of sodium salts in animal tissue. This compound is also used to produce probiotic bacteria that are beneficial to human health.
