Sodium tert butoxide (STB) is an organosilicon compound that is used to reduce the reactivity of halides, such as trifluoroacetic acid, by converting them into less reactive compounds. STB has been shown to be effective for the synthesis of fatty acids and amines from alcohols and ammonia. It is also used in process optimization and phase transition temperature studies. STB has been shown to be a useful agent for asymmetric synthesis because it can transfer hydrogen atoms from one molecule to another. It can also be used in a flow system with sodium carbonate as a catalyst.
STB is commonly used in the structural analysis of nitrogen-containing molecules because it can bond to nitrogen atoms in addition to hydrogen atoms.
