Shikimic acid is a natural phenolic compound that can be found in many plants including the spice star anise. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and is used in analytical methods such as the determination of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Shikimic acid is also used as a precursor for various pharmaceutical drugs, including acetaminophen and codeine. It has been shown to inhibit enzyme activities involved in infectious diseases such as shikimic acid, basic protein, shikimate, sephadex g-100, chlorogenic acids, water vapor and energy metabolism. Shikimic acid is also a building block for polymerase chain reactions (PCR) due to its ability to undergo glycosylation.
