Salvianolic acid B (SAB) is an active compound isolated from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba. It has been shown to have anti-fibrotic effects and to inhibit lipid peroxidation in monocytic cells. Salvianolic acid B can be prepared by chromatographic fractionation of a fractionated extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves, or by extraction with ethanolic solution. The presence of SAB in the extract can be detected by UV detection and confirmed by mass spectrometry.
SAB has been shown to have immunosuppressive effects against HIV-1 infection in vitro and in vivo, as well as anti-fibrotic effects on collagen synthesis during wound healing. This compound also inhibits proteinases and papain-like proteases, which are enzymes that break down proteins into smaller peptides.
