Stearic anhydride is a fatty acid that reacts with dextran sulfate to form a biocompatible polymer. Reactive stearic anhydride can cause hemolytic activity in the presence of cationic surfactant and at phase transition temperature. When heated, it undergoes a phase transition from the metastable form to the thermodynamically stable form. Stearic anhydride has been used as a natural compound for the production of carboxylates and acyl chains. It can also be used as a precursor in the synthesis of hydrochloric acid or magnetic particles, which are made by reacting stearic anhydride with hydrochloric acid or iron chloride respectively. Stearic anhydride is created by condensation of two molecules of stearin, but it can also be synthesized using hydroxyl groups, carboxylate groups, and acyl chains. This compound has a covalent linkage with another molecule
