Sodium deoxycholate is a sodium salt that is used as an emulsifier. It can also be used to lyse cells in vitro and in vivo, which is useful for the preparation of biological specimens for electron microscopy. Sodium deoxycholate has been shown to be effective against bacterial infections, including Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Helicobacter pylori. Sodium deoxycholate has also been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in culture and reduce the size of large tumors in mice. This drug binds to DNA by means of hydrophobic interactions, which may account for its anticancer activity. The binding results in a change in the conformation of DNA that inhibits transcription and translation.
