Description

(-)-Stylopine is a natural product derived from plants of the family Apocynaceae. It inhibits acetylcholinesterase by binding to the enzyme's active site and thus prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine, which leads to an increase in acetylcholine concentrations and subsequent activation of nicotinic receptors. This compound has been shown to be effective against inflammatory diseases such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and arthritis. (-)-Stylopine also has anti-cancer activity, inhibiting tumor growth in cell culture by blocking the formation of new blood vessels that supply nutrients to tumors. It may also have anti-inflammatory effects mediated through toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4).
