Sabinene hydrate is a sesquiterpene lactone that is found in the essential oils of plants such as melaleuca alternifolia and other members of the Myrtaceae family. It has been shown to have antimicrobial properties and genotoxic effects. Sabinene hydrate inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to fatty acid chains, which are required for cell membrane integrity. This inhibition prevents cells from taking up nutrients and causes them to lyse, leading to their death. The reaction mechanism for sabinene hydrate is not well understood, but it has been shown to inhibit the enzyme geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase, which produces an intermediate in the synthesis of diterpenes.
