Sivelestat sodium tetrahydrate is a potent inhibitor of DNA polymerase, which plays an important role in the replication of bacterial and mammalian cells. It has been shown to bind to α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and inhibit signaling pathways, such as the TLR4-dependent pathway. Sivelestat sodium tetrahydrate also inhibits elastase activity, which may be useful for treatment of inflammatory diseases. Sivelestat sodium tetrahydrate has been shown to have cardiac effects in mice and can lower blood pressure by inhibiting angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity. Sivelestat sodium tetrahydrate is also known to be an effective inhibitor of neutrophil elastase and can be used for prevention of maternal blood loss during labor.
