Sodium chlorodifluoroacetate (CFDA) is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme hydroxylase, which is an important step in the synthesis of epidermal growth factor. CFDA is a benzimidazole compound that is used as a control agent for human liver and rat liver microsomes. The reaction mechanism of CFDA involves the formation of a covalent bond between the hydroxyl group on CFDA and a cysteine residue on the enzyme, leading to inhibition. This inhibition prevents further production of epidermal growth factor and causes cell death by apoptosis. This drug has been shown to have transport properties, as it can cross the epidermis barrier in rats. Sodium chlorodifluoroacetate also inhibits malonic acid oxidation, which may be related to its effects on cancer cells.
