(+/-)-Synephrine is a natural compound that belongs to the group of pyridine alkaloids. (+/-)-Synephrine was isolated from the rhizomes of Costus speciosus and has been shown to have potential as a biomarker for obesity-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. Synephrine has also been shown to decrease body weight and fat mass, increase energy metabolism, and improve glucose tolerance in obese mice. The mechanism by which synephrine affects these physiological effects is not yet known. It has been proposed that synephrine may be an inhibitor for complex enzyme group P2. Synephrine can also inhibit the activity of enzymes such as 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, acetylcholinesterase, and monoamine oxidase B by competitive inhibition at their active sites.
