Stephanine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid that has been shown to have antimycotic and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, and cardiovascular diseases. Stephanine inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines through the inhibition of transcription-polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and protein synthesis. Stephanine also interacts with cell factor to inhibit tissue culture cells from proliferating. Stephanine has been found to enhance stem cell proliferation and differentiation in tissue culture studies. The biological effects of stephania are due to its ability to inhibit oxidative stress, regulate lipid metabolism, and promote angiogenesis.
