Soda lime is a chemical compound that can be used as a buffer in vitro to maintain the pH at 7.4. It is also used in cell culture to protect cells from the damaging effects of light, heat, and toxic gases. Soda lime has been shown to reduce the thermal expansion of water vapor, which may be due to its reaction with sodium carbonate. The mechanism for this reaction is not yet known, but it may involve deuterium isotopes or light exposure. Soda lime has been shown to increase metabolic rates by up to 75% in cell cultures and reduces viral growth by up to 50%.
