Sodium malonate is a sodium salt that inhibits mitochondrial respiration and has been shown to cause neuronal death in a model system. The reaction mechanism of this compound involves the formation of stable complexes with malonic acid, which are then transported by the malonate carrier protein. This inhibition of energy metabolism leads to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which causes cell death. Sodium malonate binds to human serum albumin and citrate ions, forming stable complexes that can be detected by x-ray diffraction data. The group p2 space group exhibits two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The molecule is stabilized by hydrogen bonding interactions between neighboring molecules and also forms strong ionic bonds with citrate ions from sodium citrate.
