The reaction mechanism for this process is nucleophilic substitution at the carbonyl group. This product has been shown to have optical properties that are sensitive to changes in pH and chloride concentration. Sodium 4-hydoxybenzenesulfonate has been immobilized onto a glassy carbon electrode surface using electrochemical immobilization techniques and then characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
